One of the most troubling consequences of Trump’s presidency has been the decline of the quality of public discourse and the destruction of decency and decorum in the political arena. While praised by his adoring fans for speaking his mind and telling it like it is, Trump’s rude and hateful rhetoric against his political enemies often crosses the line. And just as often, his fans cross it with him.
For those willing to open their eyes, Trump’s behavior in this department is almost exclusively directed at people who refuse to give him their unconditional loyalty. One of those people was John McCain.
It was during the 2016 presidential primaries that Trump made news when he said he didn’t consider McCain to be a war hero. “He’s no war hero,” Trump said at a Christian conservative forum. “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
Besides the fact that Trump essentially invalidated the service of thousands of POW’s from the Vietnam War—where many died while in captivity—his attack on McCain was strictly personal because McCain didn’t support his candidacy. Trump supporters cheered.
As you undoubtedly know, John McCain passed away over the weekend after losing his battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. When McCain was first diagnosed last year, Trump offered an obligatory “get well soon” to his political enemy, but #Cult45 called the cancer diagnosis “godly justice.”
And then there’s this recent beauty from former Trump advisor Sam Nunberg:

No wonder Hillary called Trump supporters “a basket of deplorables.”
This almost-gleeful attitude by #Cult45 over McCain’s death is the culmination of what happens when values are compromised in the name of “winning.” Yes, Washington clearly needed to be shaken up, but Trump’s ends don’t justify the means.
Before McCain’s passing, I was forced to deal with these deplorables on my Facebook page by banning followers and deleting inappropriate comments.
I’ve always been a fierce critic of John McCain. He was the first inductee into the Gutless On Principles Hall of Shame, and I have written many times about his lack of conservative values. However, McCain’s political shortcomings are no justification for finding joy in his suffering and ultimate death. In fact, doing so comes with serious consequences that go beyond supporting Donald Trump. Heads up, Fellowship of the Pharisees!

As I stated above, I have long desired to see John McCain leave the Senate, but I find no pleasure in seeing his career and his life end so tragically. Almost as tragic is the deplorable behavior of #Cult45.
Republicans are now Trumplicans, conservatives are now Trumpservatives, and they, along with the deplorable Trump supporters, have destroyed decency and decorum. This so-called “winning” is what passes for public discourse today in the Age of Trump.
