Why fight for conservatism when the odds are against me?
The threat to liberty and conservatism in America is the worst it’s ever been in our lifetime, and I’m often asked why I continue fighting for these values even though the odds are against me. The answer? Because I choose to.
Regular readers and listeners know I’ve focused a lot of attention on the need for creating an alternative to the Democrat/Republican duopoly — particularly during the 2020 election — and this has led to a lot of feedback from people who disagree with me about how Trump and the Republican Party have failed to uphold conservative values and are, therefore, unqualified to represent or lead our movement.
Of course, Trump is an easy target, but it’s simply a reality that the Republican Party has been a lost cause ever since John Boehner and Mitch McConnell teamed up to “crush the opposition” — their word for “conservatives” — while simultaneously advancing the socialist agenda of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, an agenda McConnell promised to stop in 2020 provided we allowed Republicans to remain in the majority in the Senate.
And let’s not forget Trump also targeted conservatives for elimination because they were insufficiently loyal to his awesomeness.
Obviously, Democrats are advocates of socialism, but the advance of socialism and liberty-killing big government at the hands of Republicans cannot be underestimated. Trumpist Republicans have blurred the lines of conservatism to promote the same socialist ideals as their Democrat counterparts; they just do it in the name of nationalism and fascism.
Defending conservatism over the past many years has always meant walking a lonely road with few allies to walk it with me. Still, I have continued fighting the Republican establishment and the Trumpist takeover of the former home of conservatism.
To put it bluntly, I’m a critic of these frauds, not a cheerleader, because truth is more important than going along to get along. This means I often find myself alone, but as I once wrote, “I’d rather walk the right road alone than walk the wrong road with a crowd.”
When faced by the overwhelming forces opposing conservatism, I’m often reminded of a scene near the end of the movie, The Matrix Revolutions, the third installment of The Matrix trilogy, where Agent Smith appears to have defeated Neo:
Agent Smith: Why, Mr. Anderson? Why do you do it? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you’re fighting for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Yes? No? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can’t win. It’s pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?
Neo: Because I choose to.
“Because I choose to.” That’s it, right there. Liberty or tyranny. Freedom or slavery. Surrender or revolution. To break free of Trumpism, nationalism, and the Republican Party, we need to choose to fight for conservatism.
I choose to be a revolutionary who speaks truth because, as George Orwell once stated, “Speaking the truth in times of universal deceit is a revolutionary act.”
I choose to be a voice in the wilderness who calls out faux conservatives in the media for abandoning conservatism and exchanging it for their personal preservation.
I choose to call out the Fellowship of the Pharisees for sacrificing the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the altar of cheap grace for a seat at the table of political power.
Why do I continue to fight for conservatism when the odds are overwhelmingly against me? Because I choose to.
