In a social media post by a follower I would call a solid conservative — I would use the words strident conservative, but as we all know, there’s only one of those 😉 — we engaged in a discussion about how voting against a Republican and for a Democrat was hypocritical due to their party positions on issues like abortion and the LGBT agenda.
While I understand how such a conclusion could be reached, it got me to thinking about how conservatives have continued to believe the binary lie that not voting for one party automatically means you support or approve of the other, or vice versa.
This led me to the realization that when people play the game created, owned, and operated by the two-party duopoly known as Republicans and Democrats, the establishment succeeds in making hypocrites of everyone who votes based party instead of principle.
A hypocrite is someone who does something, or acts in a way, contrary to the beliefs they claim to possess. By default, this means that even voting for a Republican is hypocritical if the person you’re voting for doesn’t reflect your values.
Last week, the GOP-controlled Senate passed a monstrous spending bill thanks to the support of 100 percent of the Democrats and all but six of the Republicans. Included in the big-government boondoggle was “hidden” funding for:
- Continued funding for Planned Parenthood
- Direct funding of every iota of Obamacare for the first time since it was created
- Funding for the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is wholly responsible for the Central America invasion and all the gangs and drugs brought to America since 2014
As conservatives, we oppose bigger government and the exploding budget deficit. We oppose abortion and government funding of baby-butchers like Planned Parenthood. We oppose government-run healthcare in any form. And we obviously support cracking down on illegal immigration. These issues are why we gave the keys to the congressional kingdom to the GOP in the first place.
These issues are also why — along with being #notHillary — many so-called conservatives and evangelicals left their principles outside the voting booth and pulled the lever for a life-long liberal Democrat with a checkered past simply because he had an “R” after his name.
Considering this betrayal of our values by the GOP, why should conservatives continue to give Republicans their money and their votes? More Republicans won’t change anything.
When others tell me to put my differences aside and support Trump and the GOP, they’re really telling me to throw away my principles and support the illusion that there’s a difference between Republicans and Democrats.
I refuse to play that game. Doing so would make me a hypocrite.
