Trump’s “in-name-only” withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement

Two decisions made by Donald Trump yesterday prove what everyone not drinking the orange Kool-aid has known from the very beginning–he is a man totally lacking of any core convictions. His campaign consisted of the same standard fare we have come to expect from politicians for generations as it was filled with promises designed to steal money, steal votes, and are quickly broken once the election was over.

First, there was Trump’s decision to stab Israel in the back when he announced that he would do what every president since Bill Clinton has done—renege on the promise to relocate the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. With a vague reference about how he “might” still relocate it in the future, the White House stated that this decision will become part of a grand scheme to negotiate a two-state peace deal in the region.

“President Trump made this decision to maximize the chances of successfully negotiating a deal between Israel and the Palestinians, fulfilling his solemn obligation to defend America’s national security interests. But, as he has repeatedly stated his intention to move the embassy, the question is not if that move happens, but only when.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly threw water on that lie, saying that Trump’s decision not to move the US embassy will actually make peace harder to achieve.

Next came the much-anticipated announcement that Trump was pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement, creating a chorus of cheers from so-called conservative media sellouts to Trumpism. In reality, Trump’s announcement on the Paris Agreement bears a striking similarity to his embassy decision.

Here’s what I mean:

Daniel Horowitz once referred to the two-state solution embraced by Trump as the “Obamacare of foreign policy” because it’s a bad idea, no one wants it, and it should be destroyed root and branch. Trump’s Paris Agreement decision could be called the “Obamacare of environmental policy” because it too is a bad idea, no one wants it, and it should be destroyed root and branch.

However, much like Trumpcare is the fake repeal of Obamacare, and Trump’s promise to relocate the embassy at a future date is a fake relocation, Trump’s Paris Agreement decision is a fake withdrawal. Trump confirmed this fact in his Rose Garden statement yesterday.

“…the United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord, but begin negotiations to reenter that Paris Accord or an entirely new transaction that’s fair…”

Translation: Just like Obamacare, Trump is repealing and replacing the Paris Agreement—not getting rid of it.

By the way, I took a lot of heat earlier this week about an article I wrote, stating that the odds were good that Trump would break his promise to void the Paris Agreement. While the Trump cult will say that he kept his promise, the reality is that his decision was another “in-name-only” moment, which means that I was right.

But that’s what you get from a politician who makes promises based on what’s popular instead of core convictions.
