Trump adopts Obama’s policy towards Israel

In the waning days of the Obama presidency, his anti-Semitic beliefs came to a head when he and Secretary of State John Kerry orchestrated the creation and passing of a United Nations resolution condemning Israel for legally building so-called “settlements” in the West Bank. It also stated that the Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall in Jerusalem were illegally “occupied” by the Jews which prevents them from praying at the Western Wall, and mandates the eviction of Jews from the Jewish Quarter where they have lived for thousands of years.

Having established his long-held desire to see Israel pull back to pre-1967 borders in order to create the pro-Palestinian two-state solution, this symbolic middle-finger to our Middle East ally were shocking, but not surprising. Just as shocking however are the similarities between Donald Trump and the former president when it comes to Israel.

During his campaign for president, Trump pledged to have the strongest platform on Israel “ever developed in the history of (America).” But, based on his performance since winning the election, along with recent comments made by the new administration, Trump’s policies towards Israel not only fail to be the strongest, they are downright Obamaesque. For example:

  • Even though Trump promised during his campaign to recognize Jerusalem as the Eternal Capital of Israel along with relocating the US embassy to Jerusalem, he has already put the brakes on this promise.
  • Trump’s Secretary of State–and Putin’s favorite CEO–Rex Tillerson is a supporter of the two-state solution as the primary “aspiration” for peace.
  • Just days after Tillerson’s confirmation, the Trump administration released a statement that sounded like it could have come from Obama himself. In it, he warned Israel that the so-called “settlements” in the West Bank region “may not be helpful” to peace efforts.

“The American desire for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians has remained unchanged for 50 years. While we don’t believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal. As the President has expressed many times, he hopes to achieve peace throughout the Middle East region. The Trump administration has not taken an official position on settlement activity and looks forward to continuing discussions, including with Prime Minister Netanyahu when he visits with President Trump later this month.”

In his piece on these latest developments, Daniel Horowitz at Conservative Review refers to the two-state solution as the “Obamacare of foreign policy”–an apt comparison in my opinion. Like Obamacare, the two-state solution is a bad idea that nobody wants; it completely fails to deliver the promised results; and it should be destroyed root and branch.

Trump needs to stop adopting Obama’s policies regarding Israel.
