Obama laughs on AF1

A few weeks ago I shared with you how Obama was making plans to raise taxes via executive action in order to bypass Congress and avoid that pesky Constitution. Well, the Republicans have finally responded. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan called on Obama to work with Congress. The two Republicans warned that unilateral action on taxes would be “a mistake, both constitutionally and politically.” Both constitutionally AND politically? Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the “constitutionally” part of the equation enough? I really don’t care about…

King Obama’s next move? Raising taxes without Congress

Article 1 – Section 8 of the Constitution states that the power to lay and collect taxes lies with the Congress. So, guess what Obama is thinking about doing. If you said raise taxes via executive action, you’d be right. At least that’s the word from White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, who confirmed Monday that Obama is “very interested” in the idea of raising taxes through unilateral executive action. It has little chance of passing, yet can easily taint the party with a tax-raising reputation. Just two days after the swearing-in of the new Congress, the January 8 Wall Street Journal (WSJ) headline reads: “Senate Republicans: Higher Gas Taxes are on the Table.” It states: “Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman James Inhofe (R., Okla.), who just took the reins of the panel, said he is open to…

Taxes Ahead

Almost right on queue, the liberals are coming out of the woodwork—the “pest” reference is deliberate—to announce that it’s time for you and I to step up to the plate and hand over more of our money. Joining a growing movement, an opinion piece by the Denver Post Editorial Board details how the recent bout of dropping fuel prices presents the perfect opportunity to raise gas tax rates in order to help the country’s neglected highway systems. They give the following reasons: Most forecasters, including the federal government, say that lower gas prices are likely to continue. And as we all know, when the government…
